According to the publisher, Weiner offers the first definitive history of the CIA -and everything is on the record. "Legacy of Ashes" is based on more than 50,000 documents, primarily from the archives of the CIA itself, and hundreds of interviews with CIA veterans, including 10 directors of central intelligence. It takes the CIA from its creation after World War II, through its battles in the Cold War and the War on Terror, to its near-collapse after 9/ll. Weiner's past work on the CIA and American intelligence was hailed as "impressively reported" and "immensely entertaining" in The New York Times. The Wall Street Journal called it "truly extraordinary . . . the best book ever written on a case of espionage." Here is the hidden history of the CIA: why 11 presidents and three generations of CIA officers have been unable to understand the world; why nearly every CIA director has left the agency in worse shape than he found it; and how these failures have profoundly jeopardized our national security.
June Book Club Best-selling author Bob Burg will discuss his book, “The Go-Giver,” during the Fontbonne University/KMOX Book Club, June 12, from 9 – 11 a.m. at Bartolino’s Osteria, at the corner of Hampton Ave. and Highway 44. The event is free but reservations are required. Call 314-444-1827 or e-mail cwbrennan@cbs.com, leave your name and phone number and reference the “June” book club to reserve a spot today. According to the publisher, “The Go-Giver” tells the story of an ambitious young man named Joe who yearns for success. Joe is a true go-getter, though sometimes he feels as if the harder and faster he works, the further away his goals seem to be. And so one day, desperate to land a key sale at the end of a bad quarter, he seeks advice from the enigmatic Pindar, a legendary consultant referred to by his many devotees simply as the chairman. Over the next week, Pindar introduces Joe to a series of “go-givers:” a restaurateur, a CEO, a financial adviser, a real estate broker and the “Connector,” who brought them all together. Pindar’s friends share with Joe the Five Laws of Stratospheric Success and teach him how to open himself up to the power of giving. Joe learns that changing his focus from getting to giving — putting others’ interests first and continually adding value to their lives — ultimately leads to unexpected returns. Imparted with wit and grace, “The Go-Giver” is a heartwarming and inspiring tale that brings new relevance to the old proverb “Give and you shall receive.” “The Go-Giver” is co-written by John David Mann. Burg, who also wrote “Endless Referrals,” has worked as a TV personality, salesperson and a sales manager. He speaks to business groups around the globe.
