Jan. 24, 2008 - Five players scored in double figures as the Fontbonne University women's basketball team beat Westminster College last night 87-67. The victory improved the Griffins St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) record to 5-2 and their overall record to 7-8. Senior forward Michelle Reale and junior guard Lauren Crain scored 13 points each to pace the Griffins. Junior forward Kaite Kirby scored 12 points while senior guard Heather McAllister and junior forward Amber Karnes pitched in 11 points each. Fontbonne used a strong first half performance to put the game away early. The Griffins held Westminster to 31 percent shooting in the first half while Fontbonne connected on 50 percent of their field goal attempts during that first 20 minutes. Fontbonne eased into the locker room with 49-26 lead. While Westminster shot better in the second half, the Griffins continued to maintain defensive pessure. Fontbonne forced Westminster into 27 turnovers for the game while getting 20 steals. Fontbonne returns to action Saturday (Jan. 26) when they travel to Jacksonville, IL to play MacMurray College at 3:00 pm.
