Feb. 29, 2008 - The Fontbonne University men's basketball team will look to back-toback St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Post-Season Tournament Championships will it plays Maryville University Saturday (March 1) at 1:00 pm at Webster University. Fontbonne advanced to the championship game by beat Westminster College last night 78-54. The victory improved the Griffins record to 20-6, the programs best record since 1993-94. Fontbonne took control of last night's game early and never looked back. The Griffins held Westminster to 26 percent shooting in the first half while the Fontbonne connected on 52 percent of their shots. The Blue Jays went 0-10 from behind the arc in the first half while the Griffins went 5-9. Fontbonne took a 37-16 lead into halftime. In the second half, Westminster was never really able to cut into the Griffins lead. Fontbonne junior Brian Fogerty led the way for the Griffins with 24 points and eight rebounds. Fontbonne senior Chad Fournie pitched in 12 points and 11 rebounds. Fontbonne had four players in double figures as sophomore Josh Branch scored 15 and junior Patrick McCoy recorded 17 points. For the game, Fontbonne shot 50 percent from the field, 47 percent from behind the arc and 93 percent from the free throw line. Fontbonne now focuses its attention on Maryville, whom it spilt with during the regular season. Maryville knocked off top seed Webster University last night 76-73. The winner of tomorrow's game will received an automatic bid to the NCAA Div. III National Tournament.
