Feb. 4, 2008 - The Fontbonne University men's basketball team used balance scoring to secure its 12 straight win beating Blackburn College Saturday 84-69. The victory improved the Griffins overall record to 15-3 and its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) record to 9-1. On Saturday, Fontbonne raced out to a 22-2 lead minutes into the game but Blackburn crawled its way back into the game late in the first half. Fontbonne sophomore guard Josh Branch paced the Griffins early with 15 points in the first half. Fontbonne lacked defensive intensity early however allowing nine different Blackburn players to score in the first half. Fontbonne took a 42-40 lead into halftime. In the second half, Fontbonne took control of the game increasing the lead to double digits within minutes of the start of the second half. Fontbonne maintained that double-digit lead throughout the second half. Fontbonne junior Brian Fogerty lead the way in the second half with 14 points while fellow junior Justin Storandt was right behind with 12 points. Fogerty finished the game with 20 points while Storandt recorded a season-high 18 points and seven rebounds. Fontbonne senior Chad Fournie provided a much needed spark as he grabbed 11 rebounds (eight offensive) and pitched in nine points. In his second start of the season, Fontbonne freshman Abyu Abozen was solid at the point guard position again recording 14 points in 40 minutes with only one turnover. Fontbonne now moves its focus to a pivotal meeting with archrival Webster University Wednesday night. Webster is currently 9-0 in the SLIAC and in first place while Fontbonne sits at 9-1 and in second place. The winner of Wednesday night's game could determine the SLIAC regular season champion and site of the SLIAC Post-Season Tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at Webster.
