Fontbonne moves into second place in the SLIAC

Jan. 30, 2008 - The Fontbonne University women's basketball team continued its stingy defense last night holding Greenville College to 29 percent shooting from the field in the game en route to a 69-48 win. The victory improved the Griffins to 9-8 overall and 7-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC). Last night's victory also gave Fontbonne sole possesion of second place in the SLIAC. Greenville dropped to 12-5 and 7-2 in the SLIAC now a half game behind Fontbonne in third place.

Fontbonne held Greenville to just 13 points in the first half. The Griffins forced nine Greenville turnovers and held them to 20 percent shooting from the field. Fontbonne senior forward Michelle Reale got the Griffins off to a good start offensively as she had seven points and seven rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Fontbonne led 26-13 at halftime.

In the second half Greenville shot the ball better but couldn't get any closer. Despite shooting 39 percent in the second half, Greenville saw their deficit grow as Fontbonne connected on 52 percent of their field goal attempts. Fontbonne junior forward Kaite Kirby and freshman guard Calista Collier paced the Griffins in the second half with 11 and 10 points respectively.

For the game, Fontbonne shot 49 percent from the field, 50 percent from behind the arc and out-rebounded Greenville 42-34.

Fontbonne returns to the court Saturday (Feb. 2) when they host Blackburn College at 3:00 pm.
