Men's lacrosse team wins third in a row

March 29, 2008 - Fontbonne University junior Patrick Zeis scored 58 seconds into overtime as the Griffins defeated University of the South to win their third game in a row. The victory improved the Griffins overall record to 3-5 while University of the South dropped to 3-4.

After both teams started slow, each team scored four second quarter goals to go into haltime tied at 5-5. In the third quarter Fontbonne took control of the game scoring three goals while shutting out University of the South. Fontbonne attack Elliott Bender scored two goals in that impressive third quarter. The Griffins outshot University of the South 7-5 in that quarter.

In the fourth quarter, University of the South turned up the intensity. University of the South outshot Fontbonne 13-11 in the final quarter and held the Griffins to one goal. University of the South tied the game at 8-8 with just under seven minutes to go in the game. Fontbonne took the lead with 2:33 to go on a goal by Zeis but University of the South battled back to tie it at 9-9 with just three seconds remaining in the game.

In overtime, Fontbonne sophomore Ray Medella won the face-off to earn the Griffins a critical possession. Zeis scored his fourth goal of the game just 58 seconds later. Zeis finished the game with four goals and two assists. Fontbonne sophomore Brooks McGee scored two goals and record one assist. Fontbonne also got two goals a piece from Elliott Bender and Josh Albrecht. Fontbonne sophomore Austen Doester recorded 17 saves for the Griffins in goal.

Fontbonne returns to the field tomorrow (March 30) as they host Adrian College at 1:00 pm.
