Cross country teams score major improvements in 1st meet

The Fontbonne University 2007 cross country season opened this past weekend as the Griffins competed in Forest Park at the Washington University Early Bird Race. Fontbonne was among the 19 colleges and universities that were represented in the meet along with NCAA Division I schools Missouri State and St. Louis University and NAIA powerhouses Lindenwood and Missouri Baptist.

The Fontbonne women brought home 12th place. The Griffins were led by Clarksville, TN freshman Rachel Hanson who ran the 4000 meter course in 15:56 to finish ahead of all other SLIAC runners in the race. The women’s team, comprised of six freshman and two sophomores, showed great improvement from last season. All 8 runners topped the best time turned in by a Fontbonne runner at this same event last year.

The Men’s team finished 10th and were lead by freshman Everett Jackson of University City, MO, who finished the 8000 meter course in a time of 29:12. The men’s team total of 300 points was also a big improvement from last season and placed them within striking distance of 11 time defending SLIAC champion, Greenville (236 points).

Both teams ran short handed as four athletes have not cleared physicals and did not participate. The Griffins hope to be at full strength when they race again on September 15 at the Maryville Invitational.
