Men's soccer team advances to SLIAC Championship game

Nov. 1, 2007 - The Fontbonne University men's soccer team defeated Westminster College last night 3-0 to earn a spot in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Post-Season Tournament Championship game Saturday afternoon. The victory improved the Griffins' record to 10-6-4.

Fontbonne got an early led when junior Jimmy Dake scored on a one-time shot off a cross from senior Don Tebeau in the 18th minute. Sophomore Kevin Vonarx added an insurance goal in the 76th minute and then sophomore Mike Utley put the game away in the 88th minute with his team leading ninth goal of the season. Junior Jess Jobe recorded the shutout for the Griffins making five saves in the process.

Saturday's championship game time has yet to be determined. The winner of the championship game will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Soccer Tournament. Fontbonne is attempting to advance to the National Tournament for the fourth time in five years.
