Working with Your Academic Advisor

You are assigned an academic advisor to assist you in making appropriate decisions about your program of study and in exploring a wide range of academic and professional opportunities. The following suggestions are offered to clarify what you can expect from your advisor and what your advisor will expect from you.

Students

1. Meet with your advisor frequently.
2. Make and keep appointments. Call or e-mail if necessary to change or cancel an appointment. Be on time.
3. Come to your appointment with specific questions in mind.
4. Come with necessary materials (pen/pencil, registration materials, semester course schedule, current degree audit,
Catalog, etc.)
5. Be willing to initiate a discussion about school work, study habits, academic progress, time management problems,
off-campus work load, etc.
6. Assume responsibility for making decisions about selection of courses, choice of major, academic and professional opportunities, etc.
7. Develop a realistic tentative course schedule.
8. Ask about other sources of information.

Advisors

1. Post office hours of varying days and hours and adhere to them.

3. Provide accurate and specific information.
4. Have on hand resource materials (Advisor’s Handbook, Catalog, semester course schedule, current degree audit).
5. Be familiar with the student’s academic background. Help the student explore options or alternatives. Be a good listener.
