Where am I?
Education: The Teaching of Writing Across the Curriculum
Fontbonne University offers a number of concentrations within its Master of Arts in Education: Curriculum and Instruction; Diverse Learners; Special Education; Reading; and the Teaching of Writing Across the Curriculum. The latter two concentrations provide a majority of coursework online. The Teaching of Writing across the Curriculum provides teachers at all levels and in all content areas with the knowledge and skills necessary to improve the writing skills of students. Those completing the program will be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate understanding of important teaching and learning theories and connect them to the teaching of writing
- Search literature and databases for information, analyze findings, and draw conclusions for application in the teaching of writing as a process
- Contribute real-world relevance to the classroom, helping teachers understand how children construct meaning through the writing process
- Demonstrate the ability to identify learning problems and plan teaching strategies through competent screening, diagnosis, and assessment of reading and writing abilities
- Design and implement communication strategies with parents which encourage reading and writing activities in the home
- Become articulate spokespersons and change agents for education, especially related to the need for good writing skills across the curriculum
- Engage in self-evaluation as a basis for continual professional development
This program is based upon the principles of writing as a process and the belief that those who teach writing skills must practice those skills themselves. We believe that writing skills must not remain the province of language arts instructors, but that such skills must be incorporated at the elementary level and supported by teachers in all content areas at the middle and secondary levels. Fontbonne especially welcomes those who have taken part in intensive writing workshops/institutes (i.e. Abydos in Texas) and will accept transfer credit granted by other universities for such work or, under certain circumstances, grant credit for participation in same.
At Fontbonne faculty are nationally recognized, experienced, and committed to the success of students. Faculty have significant experience in P-12 schools and are dedicated to preparing candidates who can make a difference in the comtemporary classroom.
Fontbonne University is accredited by Higher Learning Commission of North Central Association of Schools and Colleges (30 North LaSalle Street Suite 2400, Chicago, IL 60602-2504, 1-800-621-7440).
