Curriculum
Students must successfully complete 42 semester hours of graduate credit to earn a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology. All courses are three credit hours unless stated otherwise.

Prerequisites
Students who do not have a bachelor’s degree in communication disorders must take the following prerequisite courses during fall and spring semesters before starting the graduate curriculum:
- CDS 105 Speech/Language Development
- CDS 201 Anatomy and Physiology of Speech/Hearing Mechanisms
- CDS 211 Nature of Language
- CDS 220 Phonetics
- CDS 231 Speech Science
- CDS 302 Phonological and Articulation Disorders
- CDS 311 Introduction to Language Disorders
- CDS 410 Audiology
- CDS 414 Auditory Rehabilitation
- CDS 548 Clinical Methods
Degree requirements
Required Core Courses (Eight credits total):
- CDS 500 Introduction to Research Methods
- CDS 535 Assessment Issues in Communication Disorders
- CDS 570 Comprehensive Seminar in Communication Disorders (Two credits, one credit taken in each of students’ final semesters)
Six credit hours from each of the following areas (18 total credits):
Neurological Disorders
- CDS 515 Motor Speech Disorders
- CDS 527 Adult Neurogenic Language and Cognitive Disorders
- CDS 577 Dysphagia
Language Disorders
- CDS 524 Language of the School-Aged Child
- CDS 532 Seminar in Early Childhood Language
- CDS 534 Seminar in Sound System Disorders
- CDS 566 Language and Literacy in Children “At Risk”
Speech Disorders
- CDS 522 Seminar in Orofacial Anomalies
- CDS 525 Advanced Studies in Voice Pathology
- CDS 526 Seminar in Fluency Disorders
Clinical Practicum Requirements
All students must participate in a practicum for at least four semesters at one credit hour each. Students must register for the following classes while completing their practicum:
- CDS 540-546 Graduate Clinical Practicum (1 credit hour per semester)
- CDS 547 Public School Practicum (1 credit hour per semester)

- CDS 523 Intervention with Children Who Are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing
- CDS 531 Communication Development for Children Who Are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing
- CDS 552 Counseling Issues in Communication Disorders
- CDS 555 Pediatric Audiology and Habilitation
- CDS 556 Auditory Technology and Cochlear Implants
- CDS 560 Clinical Research in Communication Disorders (1-3 credit hours)
- CDS 565 Directed Readings in Communication Disorders (1-3 credit hours)
- CDS 567 Communication and Behavior: An International Perspective
- CDS 580 Practical Applications of Communication Systems and Assistive Technology
*Any courses previously listed that have not already been completed for credit can count toward elective credit, as well.
