Where am I?
Early Childhood Degree
Look at a child, and you can see the future. The positive growth and development of today’s children has a critical bearing on the state of tomorrow’s society.
You can make a difference by becoming involved in a career that puts you in a position to create positive family environments. If you’re looking for a rewarding, satisfying position, a career in early childhood may be for you.
Fontbonne’s early childhood program includes coursework and practical experience in areas such as child development, early childhood education and administration, parenting and family relationships. You’ll get hands-on experience outside the classroom as early as your freshman year. And that’s important when comparing programs.
The early childhood program is housed in the Human Environmental Sciences department. Our mission is to strengthen and enrich the quality of life for individuals and families through the lifecycle. We understand that the care and education of young children needs to be a collaborative function within the family unit.
Seniors graduate with a strong background and an edge in skills required for the workplace and graduate school. And students can enhance their study by choosing from several minors, including human services, English and fine art.
What Can I Do With My Early Childhood Degree?
One of the fastest growing majors in the country, early childhood provides a strong foundation for any number of careers both in and out of the field. Early childhood majors graduate with creative, critical thinking and problem solving skills, they can effectively communicate their ideas, and they know how to work both individually and as part of a team.
You’ll have several options, including a bachelor’s degree with or without certification. Certification options include early childhood (birth - third grade) and early childhood/special education (birth - third grade). Both certificates prepare students to teach in Missouri public and private schools.
The early childhood major without certification lends itself to a variety of combinations with other majors or minors for additional career options. An early childhood degree can lead to numerous professions including a teacher for pre-school - grade 3, a director of an early childhood center, a curriculum development specialist, a parent educator or a child advocate, just to name a few.
Early childhood graduates who continue to the graduate level may choose to focus on either research or field practice experiences at many reputable institutions across the country.
Fontbonne University is dedicated to providing students with a strong foundation in the liberal arts. Through our core curriculum, students learn how to think critically, solve problems and communicate effectively. No matter what career path you choose, an education from Fontbonne will give you the tools to succeed in both work and life.
