Family & Consumer Sciences Major

Do you have a desire to work with children, adolescents and adults to help them improve their quality of life? Do assessing problems, developing solutions and working with individuals and families appeal to you? Are you interested in health and nutrition, fashion and textiles, child development and parenting, or consumer and family resource management? If so, a major in Family and Consumer Sciences, or FCS, might be the right choice for you.

Why Family and Consumer Sciences with Fontbonne?

The Fontbonne Family and Consumer Sciences program is housed in the human environmental sciences department, which is dedicated to strengthening and enriching the quality of life for individuals, families and communities. Our FCS program is the only program within a 125-mile radius in the state. It provides you with hands-on experience working with children, adolescents and the community from the very beginning of your studies. In addition, our program is unique in providing a certification and a non-certification option in FCS. The FCS certification option is geared toward the student seeking to be an educator in a public or private school setting, while the non-certification option prepares students to work with children, adolescents and families in a variety of community, industry, social service and government settings. The FCS program puts you in touch with professionals in your chosen area who become great contacts for networking and employment opportunities. Both the certification and non-certification options allow you to blend and apply theory from the classroom with real-world experiences.

Student advising at Fontbonne is individualized. In the FCS program you will receive guidance from your faculty adviser who is mindful of your career and personal growth goals. The FCS program integrates strong general education requirements with coursework in nutrition, health, child and human development, family resource management, aesthetics and accessibility of interiors, interpersonal relationships, advocacy, parenting and more. You will also have the opportunity to become involved in community projects, service-learning experiences, and a wide range of local and national professional association activities.
