Dietetics is the science or art of applying the principles of food and nutrition to health. Registered dietitians help people learn about food, nutrition and lifestyle choices to keep them healthy. This is a discipline in which students combine creativity and scientific method to find answers that may help improve health. Dietetics is a field for those with inquisitive minds who enjoy science as much as they do people. The course work is challenging, and the career possibilities are exciting and numerous.

Why Fontbonne?

Our curriculum provides a broad and balanced foundation in all of the core areas of dietetics – clinical nutrition, community nutrition and food service management. You will study and learn culinary skills, how to alter diets for health promotion, disease prevention and treatment, how to best communicate nutrition information to the public, and how to manage food service establishments. You will also be given the opportunity to receive hands-on experience in the field working and assisting other professionals.
A unique aspect of our program is the opportunity to conduct independent active research projects. Senior-level dietetics majors present projects during a symposium at the end of their final semester. They may also have the opportunity to publish and present their work at the state or national level. You’ll leave with an impressive portfolio and a competitive advantage in your career search or in graduate school. Additionally, our program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (www.eatright.org/cade).

What can I do with my diatetics degree?

Once you successfully complete your undergraduate degree in dietetics, you will be ready to apply for a dietetic internship, a necessary step toward becoming a registered dietitian. Employment opportunities exist in health clubs, hospitals or other health care facilities, food companies, schools, research labs and restaurants. You can work as a clinical dietitian, food service director, sports nutritionist, regional nutrition manager, nutrition educator, renal dietitian, bionutritionist, or consultant dietitian, just to name a few.
