Do you have a desire to work with adolescents and adults to help them improve their quality of life? Does assessing problems and developing solutions for people’s daily lives appeal to you? If so, becoming a Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) educator and professional may be the

right choice for you.

Why Fontbonne?

The Family and Consumer Sciences degree (FACS) at Fontbonne University provides you with hands-on experience from the very beginning of the program. This allows you to blend theory with field work, practicum opportunities, student teaching and related experiences. Our program puts you in touch with professionals in your chosen area who become great contacts for networking and employment opportunities.

The FACS program is housed in the human environmental sciences department, which is dedicated to strengthening and enriching the quality of life for individuals and families throughout the lifecycle — helping individuals become active, contributing members of the community.

At Fontbonne, you’ll receive guidance from faculty advisers who are mindful of your career and personal growth goals. The FACS program integrates strong general education requirements with coursework in nutrition, health, wellness, resource management, housing, human development, interpersonal relationships, parenting and more. This gives you a strong foundation for a lifelong career working with adolescents and adults in a variety of settings. You’ll also have the opportunity to become involved in community projects, service learning experiences and a wide range of local and national professional association activities.

Your possibilities are only limited by your own imagination! There is an enormous shortage of FACS educators throughout the local area, state and nation. Our graduates are sought after by employers because of our reputation for preparing outstanding professionals and the number of alumni who have distinguished themselves as leaders in their professional work and careers.

Most of our graduates in Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) are educators in middle and secondary schools. Several have become department chairs, curriculum coordinators and principals, while others have moved into school counseling. Others work in community agencies as well as adult education and outreach programs.

Still other opportunities exist in consumer affairs or by working with local retailers or businesses in consumer education, marketing, and even product development and sales.

And with an advanced degree, you may want to teach at the college level where there is also a growing shortage of educators and scholars.

Our commitment

Fontbonne University is dedicated to providing students with a strong foundation in the liberal arts. Through our core curriculum, students learn how to think critically, solve problems and communicate effectively.
