A guide for students who haven't declared a major

Take our fun, informal survey to find out what areas of study might be right for you. Start here!

"What's your major?"

At Fontbonne, more than half of incoming students do not have an answer to that question when they first arrive. And that's OK. In fact, we see it as your opportunity to explore more than 50 majors and minors to find the best possible fit.

"We understand that it's hard to pinpoint a major. Our curriculum allows students to venture into various areas of study in the first four semesters," says Keith Quigley, director of freshman recruitment at Fontbonne. "Students get time to discover their interests and earn credits that count toward their degree - even if they haven't decided on a direction yet."

Firmly rooted in the liberal arts, Fontbonne requires 42 hours of general education credits for every major. While earning these credits, students are encouraged to take a variety of classes - not only to expand their intellectual horizons, but also to help them identify an area of study. You can take up to four semesters to decide what is right for you without any pressure from us.*

* Some programs, such as Dietetics (BS), Elementary Education (BA) and Speech-Language Pathology (BS), do require a structured sequence of study, so it's best to declare those majors as early as possible.

Explore and discover

College is about discovery. We care about who you are and who you want to become. Do you enjoy plotting business strategies or studying the scientific makeup of food? Are you more into the flow of poetry or the contemplation of a complex math problem? Maybe you see yourself teaching children of all capabilities in the classroom. From Biotechnology (BS) to Communication Studies (BA), from Deaf Education (BA) to Religious Studies (BA) - you are sure to find what's right for you. And remember, there is opportunity in every choice.

That's exactly what Elizabeth Fogt, Fontbonne's director of Academic Advising and retention, wants students to realize. "Many students feel that choosing a major locks them into their future career," Fogt says. "In fact, a bachelor's degree prepares each student for a lifetime of learning and for a variety of career opportunities."

To assist you in the process of choosing a major, career counselors and academic advisors, as well as instructors, are always available to answer questions about various programs and career fields. Fontbonne freshmen are required to meet with the career counseling office during their first semester to help determine interests and strengths that might point toward a particular program. Fortunately, a Fontbonne bachelor's degree provides you with a strong foundation in the knowledge and skills that will benefit you in any profession.

Why Fontbonne?

Fontbonne is an excellent choice if you're in an exploratory state of mind! As an institution dedicated to the liberal arts, we provide you with a broad background of knowledge and skills essential to any field - and beneficial to lifelong learning. You'll acquire skills in writing and communication, knowledge of math, a sense of history, an understanding of physical and social environments, and an appreciation of philosophy and religion. Our general education courses help you distinguish between opinion and fact, make informed judgments and evaluate and solve problems.

We offer unique interdisciplinary degree programs for students who are interested in pursuing a course of study that might cross over two or more majors or areas of study. A General Studies (BA) major and a University Major (BA or BS) are two examples in which a student can develop an appreciation and grasp of several academic disciplines in a customized program of study. Our advisors can help you understand the opportunities, differences and requirements involved in these programs.

No matter what career path you choose, an education from Fontbonne will give you the tools to succeed in both work and life. Fontbonne offers 35 majors, 25 minors and 15 master's degree programs. We have nearly 40 Student Organizations and clubs as well as 17 men and women's Athletic Teams.
