How to Apply | Financial Aid Basics | Financial Aid Eligibility | Types of Aid | Resources and FAQs | Financial Aid Staff
Loans are a reality for most students (and for some, their parents as well) attending college today. Since loans must be repaid with interest, we encourage our students to borrow the bare minimum needed to meet their expenses.
Listed below are the types of loans available; be sure to click through the links in the “Learn More” sidebar for additional information.
Federal Direct Loans: Subsidized
The Subsidized Direct loan is available to students who have filed the FAFSA and demonstrate financial need (See Financial Aid Eligibility for more information). This loan is subject to both yearly and aggregate limits, as defined by the U.S. Department of Education. A Direct Loan Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling must be completed by the student before loan money is released to the school.
Federal Direct Loans: Unsubsidized
The Unsubsidized Direct loan is available to students who have filed the FAFSA, and does not require financial need. This loan is subject to both yearly and aggregate limits, as defined by the U.S. Department of Education. A Direct Loan Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling must be completed by the student before loan money is released to the school.
Perkins Loan
The Perkins Loan provides a long-term federal loan to undergraduate students with demonstrated need. The amount of the loan varies. The funding is limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Fontbonne University is the lender of funds composed of both federal and university monies. A Perkins Loan Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling must be completed by the student before loan money is released to the school.
Parent PLUS loan
Federal Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) are available to the parents of dependent, undergraduate degree-seeking students. This is a non-need based loan and its availability is based upon a credit check and should only be applied for after eligibility for the Stafford Loan has been determined. The loan limit is the budgeted cost of education minus other financial aid.
Federal Grad Plus Program
The GradPLUS Loan is a low interest, federally backed student loan guaranteed by the U.S. Government for students pursuing a Graduate level degree. Like its undergraduate counterpart, the Grad PLUS Loan can be used to pay for the total cost of education less any aid you've already been awarded. Also, like the undergraduate version, eligibility for the Graduate PLUS Loan is dependent on the borrower's credit rating.
Alternative (Private) Student Loans
Alternative, or private, student loans are credit-based products from independent lenders. If the borrower does not have established credit, a co-signer is recommended. Please see our Alternative Loan page for additional information and links to complete online applications.
Sallie Mae Tuition Pay Plan
Fontbonne partners with Sallie Mae to provide our students with an interest-free, monthly payment plan. To learn more information or to sign up, please visit SallieMae or speak with a representative of our Business Office at 314-889-1405.
