Coach Lee McKinney is entering his 21st season as Fontbonne's Head Men's Basketball Coach. Coach McKinney came to Fontbonne to coach the University's first men's basketball team in 1998. He has coached and taught physical education for more than 45 years at the collegiate or high school level. He moved from high school coaching to collegiate coaching in 1978, when he accepted the Athletic Director/Head Men's Basketball Coach position at Missouri Baptist University. McKinney's record during his 10 years at Missouri Baptist was 188-126. He was elected Show-Me Conference Coach of the Year in 1982 and in 1988.
Since moving to Fontbonne, Coach McKinney has won two SLIAC Conference Championships, four Conference Tournament Championships and has led the Griffins to three NCAA Division III National Basketball Tournament appearances. Coach McKinney now has over 774 career coaching victories with more than 500 coming at the collegiate level.
Coach McKinney was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1992, the Missouri Baptist University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003, the Fontbonne University Hall of Fame in 2000, and was honored at the 2002 NCAA Final Four ‘Guardians of the Game’ ceremony for his distinguished college career. Upon the occasion of this 700th win, the basketball court in the Dunham Student Activity Center was named the "Lee McKinney Court." Former students and friends have established an endowed scholarship in his name. In the 2007-08 season, Coach McKinney became the Cal Ripken of basketball coaches, coaching his 1,300 game without missing one.
