The history, philosophy, and religion department embraces a wide range of disciplines. In
order to meet the needs of today's student to examine questions of
meaning and belief, of truth and value in the living of life,
philosophy and religion courses provide experiences of critical search
and questioning in matters of ultimate concern. The student is urged,
within the context of the liberal arts, to develop a personal
understanding of the religious and philosophical dimensions of
authentic human existence and a personal appreciation of the various
traditions in which these dimensions have found expression,
particularly the traditions of Christianity. In order to give the
student a knowledge of the past, an appreciation of cultural heritage
and the tools for dealing with the complex problems and issues of
modern society, the curriculum of the social sciences offers courses
from the disciplines of geography, gerontology, history, human
services, law, political science, psychology and sociology.
