Department of Human Environmental Sciences

The human environmental sciences department prepares graduates to assume leadership roles in strengthening and enriching the quality of life of individuals and families throughout the life cycle. As an original department dating from the founding of the university in 1923, HES represents the commitment of the Sisters of St. Joseph to serve a world in need.

Graduates assist consumers in needs assessment, decision making, problem solving and resource management in the areas of nutrition, food and health management, child development, parent education, family relationships, shelter and environment, clothing and textiles and goods and services--all areas that directly influence the quality of daily life.

HES curriculum encourages the development of a disciplined mind, critical and creative thought, skills in human relations and communication, as well as professional competence. Practicums, observation courses, internships and student teaching are essential to each program. St. Louis provides a wealth of excellent resources and opportunities for such practical experiences.

HES is recognized nationally for its outstanding integration of the liberal arts with strong content from the areas of specialization. The department has been accredited by the Council for Accreditation of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. The dietetics program is approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association, and teacher certification programs in early childhood and family and consumer science education are rated highly by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
