May 11, 2010 - The Fontbonne University women's softball team will play Illinois Wesleyan Thursday at 6 pm in the NCAA Tournament at Simpson College. The Griffins are the #7 seed in the Indianola, Iowa Regional while Illinois Wesleyan is the #2 seed.
This is Fontbonne’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since the 2006 season. The Griffins (24-15) secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by winning the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament. Illinois Wesleyan University (30-14) is the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) champion and they are seeded second in the Regional. This will be their fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in a row.
Fontbonne and Illinois Wesleyan played each other twice this year with each team winning a game. The Griffins defeated the Titans on April 9th 1-0. In that game, Fontbonne sophomore pitcher Ana Hibbeler threw a complete game shutout. The next day, Illinois Wesleyan rebounded to knock off the Griffins 2-1.
