Fine Arts Gallery to Present Extensive Exhibition of Works by Michael Grimaldi

Beginning Friday, March 4, the Fontbonne University Fine Arts Gallery will present Drawings: Michael Grimaldi, the most extensive exhibition devoted solely to Grimaldi’s works on paper to date. The exhibit will be on display through March 31.

Organized by Ellen Gochnour, the gallery’s director, the exhibition will include more than thirty drawings produced between 2005 and 2011.

Michael Grimaldi is among today’s foremost contemporary realist artists. The works in this exhibition represent a wide range of monochromatic representations within the category of drawing from large-scale, formal realizations, to smaller compositional sketches and studies.

About the Artist

Michael Grimaldi was born and raised in New York City. After completing his formal studies at the Art Students League of New York, the National Academy of Design and independent studies in Europe, Grimaldi has built a strong and respected career as a painter and draftsman.

His work is included in many public and private collections including the James T. Dyke Collection of Contemporary Drawings, the Sandy Besser Collection in San Francisco's De Young Museum, Forbes Magazine Collection and Lucasfilms LTD. Additionally, Grimaldi has exhibited at the Arnot Museum, de Young Museum, National Academy Museum, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Naples Museum of Arts, Arcadia Gallery, Forum Gallery, Hirschl and Adler Gallery, and John Pence Gallery.

Awards include: The Edward G. McDowell Travel Grant (1993), Stacey Foundation Grant (1998, 1999), The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant (1999, 2002), The Forbes Foundation Residency Fellowship, Balleroy, France (2002), and the American Academy in Rome-Affiliated Fellowship/Alma Schapiro Prize (2007).

Grimaldi currently teaches life drawing, anatomy and painting at the Art Students League of New York and the Janus Collaborative School of Art which he co-founded in 2007.
