ST. LOUIS — The Fontbonne University women's softball team defeated Webster
University Friday, May 6, 2-1 to win the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SLIAC) Tournament and earn their second straight trip to the
NCAA Tournament.
The Griffins used dominating pitching to win
the tournament as they allowed just two runs in three games. In Friday’s game, sophomore Kourtney VonBehren allowed just one run in
seven innings striking out nine. She earned the complete game victory,
her second victory of the tournament. VonBehren earned SLIAC Tournament
MVP honors.
Fontbonne (29-8) took a lead right out of the gates
as senior Amanda Beaver drilled a two-out single right back up the
middle scoring freshman Marissa Simon, who tripled earlier in the first
inning. The Griffins increased their lead to 2-0 in the second inning as
freshman Cara Hargate doubled scoring junior Samantha Rosner.
In
the bottom of the fourth inning, Webster got one of the runs back on an
RBI double by Hanna Brandisi. VonBehren pitched herself out of
trouble in the final three innings to secure the victory for the
Griffins.
Fontbonne will find out their next opponent and the
date of their next game when the NCAA Tournament Regional assignments
are announced Monday, May 9.
