The Fontbonne University softball team won the SLIAC Tournament for the third straight year and beat Webster University for a record-setting sixth time with a dramatic walk-off on Friday, May 4. The Griffins, 27-10 overall, qualify for the NCAA Div. III Softball Tournament for the third straight year.
The Griffins rallied for three runs in their final at-bat to beat Webster University 6-5. Fontbonne sophomore Cara Hargate drilled a walk-off two run single to propel the Griffins to victory. For her heroics, Hargate was named Tournament MVP. Joining Hargate on the All-Tournament team were senior Sam Rosner, junior Kourtney VonBehren and sophomore Rachel McCarthy.
This is the third year Fontbonne has won the SLIAC Tournament. The Griffins also won the SLIAC regular season championship for the second year. In the last two seasons, Fontbonne has posted a 28-2 SLIAC record.
In addition to the player’s honors, Coach Bill Rosner was also recognized as the 2012 SLIAC Softball Coach of the Year. Rosner led the team to a conference record 28 wins during the past two seasons. This is Rosner’s fourth season with the Griffin softball program.
The NCAA announced on Monday, May 7 that Fontbonne will be the #5 seed in the Bloomington, Ill. Regional of the NCAA Div. III National Softball Tournament. The Griffins (27-10) will play #4 seed University of Wisconsin Eau-Claire on Thursday at noon at Illinois Wesleyan University.
