Fontbonne instructor, student lending hand to art exhibit

Angie Liljequist, a Fontbonne University fashion merchandising instructor, and Carlyn Parent, a student in the fashion merchandising program, will play a large role in an intricate art exhibit opening this weekend.

“Women & Wardrobe: The Riehl Collection” opens at 7 p.m. this Saturday, August 2, at the Portfolio Gallery located at 3514 Delmar Blvd. in the Grand Center Neighborhood in St. Louis. The collection exhibits the work of Janet Riehl, whose work can be found in collections in the United States, Europe and Latin America. Opening festivities run until 9 p.m. and the exhibit will be on display until the end of August.

Liljequist and Parent will assist with the exhibit by coordinating models wearing traditional African garments in unorthodox ways. The fashion-forward arrangements will demonstrate contemporary interpretations of time-honored African motifs, prints, and styles.

“We met with the director of the Portfolio Gallery, Robert Powell, who told me he is delighted to establish a relationship with Fontbonne University,” said Liljequist, who traveled to Kenya in 2012 on a Fontbonne service trip. “It’s exciting for both the gallery and the university that this opportunity came along.”

Three to four models will be stationed throughout the three-story 19th century-style home wearing a variety of pieces Liljequist obtained during her Africa service trip and pieces from Liljequist’s personal collection.
