EarthDance Organic Farming ApprenticeshipPosted by: EarthDancePosted date: 2012-Nov-20
Location: St. Louis City, MO
EarthDance is currently accepting applications for the 2013 season! The apprenticeship is a commitment of 9.5 hours a week, beginning in early March and concluding in November. Apprentices engage in all aspects of farm operation, from seeding in the greenhouse to selling at farmers markets. Apprentices also attend weekly enrichment classes on subjects such as pest and disease management and preserving the harvest. Monthly field trips to local farms offer apprentices the opportunity to network with other farmers and see a variety of growing models. Tuition for the program is $750 for the year, and includes a weekly share of the harvest. Full and partial scholarships are available. To apply, or for more information, visit www.earthdancefarms.org or contact Rachel Levi, earthdancefarms.org">rachel
Since 2008, EarthDance, a Ferguson-based farm and nonprofit organization, has sought to carry on a sustainable farming legacy. For three generations, the Mueller family tended crops as the city of Ferguson grew around the once 200-acre farm. When the last of the family farmers passed away, the farm's future was uncertain. EarthDance Founder Molly Rockamann sought help from The Open Space Council in order to preserve Missouri's oldest organic farm. Today, the Mueller farm's remaining 14-acres are home to EarthDance's educational programs. In 2012, EarthDance purchased the farm, ensuring that it will remain a productive site for sustainable agriculture. In order to grow more food and farmers for the St. Louis regions, EarthDance operates a part-time apprenticeship in organic agriculture. Ninety-four apprentices have participated in the EarthDance Organic Farming Apprenticeship Program; graduates of the program have gone on to start their own farms, cultivate urban gardens, and spearhead youth gardening projects. |
