St. Louis Public Radio is currently looking for interns for the summer 2013 semester.

Engineering

Minimum Requirements
: Some knowledge of basic electronics and mechanical ability. Approval from the St. Louis Public Radio Chief Engineer.

Description: The intern will assist the Chief Engineer in all technical areas of the station and plan projects as needed. Tasks may include: Automation system(s) setup; computer setup/installation; use/configuration of Audio Digital Console system; wiring/rewiring equipment; use of test equipment and testing procedures; application of industry standards and FCC technical regulations; and troubleshooting and related paperwork. Radio frequency work with FM transmitter, microwave STL, and satellite downlink at additional St. Louis Public Radio facilities outside the studios may also be included.

Evaluation
: Evaluation of the intern will occur in accordance with guidelines of his or her school. Considerations will include ability to follow instructions, efficient use of time, self-motivation and initiative, willingness and ability to learn new skills, accuracy and attention to detail, and dependability. A final evaluation will be held at the end of the semester.


Interactive Media

Minimum Requirements:
Excellent writing skills and some experience editing web pages and creating graphics required. Familiarity with and enthusiasm for St. Louis Public Radio programming preferred. Approval from the St. Louis Public Radio Digital Media Manager and availability of 12 hours per week.

Internship Description: The intern will assist the Digital Media Manager in updating the St. Louis Public Radio website and managing special projects as assigned.

Evaluation: Evaluation of the intern will occur in accordance with the guidelines of his or her school. Considerations will include ability to work independently, follow instructions, use time efficiently, attend to details, and produce quality writing. Initiative and enthusiasm will also be considered.


News

Minimum Requirements:
Excellent writing skills, basic typing proficiency and basic computer skills, and availability of at least 10-15 hours per week. The student should be articulate enough to conduct interviews over the telephone or in person. Minimum ability to use broadcast equipment is important. Approval from the St. Louis Public Radio News Director.

Internship Description: The intern will learn to record and playback on the digital recording medium; learn basic editing skills in digital media; be taught broadcast style writing; learn to write and read a newscast to time; go out with a reporter to a press conference at least once during the semester; learn how to update the news page on the St. Louis Public Radio website; incorporate their writing, producing, and broadcasting skills into their final project. Advanced interns will learn how to conduct telephone interviews and to produce them. The intern may be asked to conduct interviews in the field or to attend news conferences. Throughout the semester, the intern may also be asked to assist anchors in producing newscasts.

Evaluation: Evaluation of the intern will occur in accordance with guidelines of his or her school. Considerations will include production skills (microphone techniques, sound quality, editing, etc.), writing ability (structure of the story, attribution of facts, objectivity, and liveliness of the writing), willingness to follow direction, efficient use of time, self-motivation and initiative, and accuracy and attention to detail. A final evaluation will be held at the end of the semester.


Marketing, Events, & Community Outreach

Minimum Requirements
: Excellent writing skills and excellent organizational skills required. Familiarity with and enthusiasm for public radio programming preferred. Approval from the St. Louis Public Radio Marketing, Events, & Outreach Manager.

Internship Description: The intern will assist with the conversion of St. Louis Public Radio print materials and photography to digital files.  Additionally, the student will assist in the preparation of St. Louis Public Radio events including set-up and breakdown.

Evaluation: Evaluation of the intern will occur in accordance with the guidelines of his or her school. Considerations will include ability to work independently and follow instructions, use time efficiently, attend to details, and produce quality writing.


Production

Minimum Requirements
: Experience with digital recording and editing preferred but not required. Approval from the St. Louis Public Radio Production Manager.

Internship Description:The student will learn to operate the console, the Adobe Audition digital editing software, the AudioVAULT hard drive storage and playback system, and will learn St. Louis Public Radio broadcast production procedures and standards. Activities throughout the semester may include recording and editing commentaries and transferring them to AudioVAULT; recording and mixing the open and prepar­ing music beds for the daily talk show; post production of the daily talk show to produce a recording for the evening repeat and a version for the website; serving as the call screener for the daily talk show; archiving the talk show and commentaries; and recording and mixing fundraising spots. More advanced interns may also serve as engineer for the talk show. There may be an occasional remote recording for use on the Friday arts show.

Evaluation: Evaluation of the intern will occur in accordance with the guidelines of his or her school. Considerations will include production skills, effective use of time, initiative, and ability to follow instructions and work independently.
