  VACANCY NOTICE

 

 

POSITION: Early Childhood Education Assistant Teacher

 

                                                                    STATUS: Part-time/Non-Exempt

 

REPORTS TO: Preschool Coordinator                  SALARY: $7.35-$8.00 per hour

                                                                    Base Wage Rate: $7.35 per hour

 

PURPOSE OF POSITION

 

Establish and maintain an environment that ensures children’s safety and well-being as well as ensuring the individual needs of each child are met with dignity and respect. Implement activities that advance a child’s development and learning, including social, emotional and physical competence.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB (include as many as necessary)

 

1.   Understands the concepts of mutual respect, caring, honesty and responsibility in positive communications and interaction with children, parents and staff

2.   Guides and assists in development of program content and special events

3.   Ensures program process meets the “Hands On, Minds On” approach to learning

4.   Assists in development, training and ongoing educational requirements through orientation, training and continued educational opportunities

5.   Understands the teacher’s role as that of facilitator vs. instructor

6.   Communicates problems, issues or concerns with Director

7.   Ensures open, positive communication and mentoring is provided to all staff on an ongoing basis.

8.   Possesses the ability to relate to children, parents, peers, branch staff, volunteers and community

9.   Must pass a medical examination including TB test as required by DOHSS and Hep A (if applicable).

10.                Must pass DOHSS child abuse screening, criminal records check and Child Care Worker Registry

11.                 Must read and sign YMCA Child Abuse pamphlet and report any suspected case of child abuse to Director

12.                 Must serve as Lead Teacher in teacher’s absence or as needed

13.                 Must read and sign YMCA ECE Informational Manual

14.                 Must ensure and maintain confidentiality of family, children and staff

15.                 Actively participates in all program activities and special events

16.                 Follow all guidelines and procedures established by the YMCA, Department of Health and Senior Services and Accreditation Agencies

17.                 Responsible for ensuring diverse program experiences are provided for children each day

18.                 Understands difference between discipline and punishment. Uses positive verbal and non -verbal communication with children to build trusting and stable relationships

19.                Keeps up-to-date records on all children participating in the program

20.                 Willingly substitutes in any area of the center with flexibility and a positive attitude

21.                 Participates in Branch World Service and Partner with Youth Fundraisers

22.                 Teamwork is demonstrated through personal interaction amongst all staff

23.                 Responsible for insuring the safety of all children

24.                 Knows where children are at all times

25.                 Children are provided opportunities to build self-help and independence skills

26.                 Ensures all children’s individual needs are met with dignity and respect

27.                 Program equipment is cared for properly and checked daily for safety

28.                 Indoor and outdoor space is monitored daily for health and safety concerns

29.                 Report all repairs, incidents, and accidents to the Center Director and/or Executive Director. Reports made on appropriate forms and within required time frame

30.                 Responsible to keep center clean and sanitary to ensure health and safety of all children

31.                 Keeps a neat and clean appearance, in accordance with the standards set by the YMCA. Staff wears nametags and staff shirts while on duty

32.                 Responsible for all aspects of quality customer service-including greeting parents, handling parent questions and concerns and staying informed of programs

33.                 Serves as a relationship builder for site staff and families enhancing their commitment to the YMCA members and the mission.

34.                 Maintains and ensures confidentiality of all participants in the program

35.                 Keeps current on any new program activities or special events to assist and enhance the programs

36.                 Able to interpret YMCA policy and procedures and make independent, sound judgments and decisions, which support the YMCA of Greater St. Louis

37.                 Reinforce and model the Membership By Design at all times

38.                 Be knowledgeable of how to use a fire extinguisher and other safety equipment

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include as many as necessary)

 

1.   Ensure the individual needs of the children are met for proper coordination of the program within the center

2.   Utilize solid judgment and discretionary skills as well as make independent decisions that will affect the YMCA of Greater St. Louis and its departments

3.   Maintain positive relationships with many diverse people, including staff, parents, volunteers and program site administration.

4.   Demonstrate strong public relation skills

5.   Ensure YMCA policies and guidelines are followed at all times

6.   Model, practice and carry out the YMCA Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility

7.   Plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities that advance all areas of children’s development and learning, including social, emotional, intellectual and physical competence.

8.   Conduct the program in accordance with YMCA principles of developmentally appropriate practices

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

q  High School Graduate

q  At least 1 year of child care experience

q  Possess 3 college credit hours in Early Childhood Education

q  Must meet Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services criteria as a State Certified Director and be a High School graduate

 

Experience:

1.   Must be at least 18 years of age

2.   Must have experience working with children

3.   Must have strong communication, organization and detail skills

4.   Must have the ability to relate to children, parents, branch staff members and volunteers

5.   Must pass CPR/First Aid Certification

6.   Must complete YMCA required trainings

7.   Must follow directions, have strong leadership skills, be self-motivated and possess knowledge of group work principles and processes

8.   Certification in Principles of YMCA Child Care and Working with Birth-5 (within required time frame)

9.   Must complete a new hire packet and Tortal training prior to first working day

Perform all duties while exemplifying the "Y" values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility and Faith

 

Under the general direction of the Program Director & Site Director, the incumbent is responsible for assisting with the overall program, supervision of children and day-to-day operation of the School Age Child Care program.  He/she relates to the Program Director, Site Director, Staff Team, state licensing regulators and community resource agencies.
