May 3, 2010 – The Fontbonne University women’s softball team concluded their 2010 regular season winning three of four games this weekend. The Griffins swept a doubheader against Spalding University and split a doubleheader against regional power Washington University.
Fontbonne ends the regular season with a 21-14 overall record and a 12-3 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) record. The Griffins have qualified for the SLIAC Tournament beginning this weekend. Fontbonne will be either be the #1 or #2 seed in that tournament depending on other SLIAC results this week.
Against Spalding, Fontbonne’s offense erupted for 24 runs in two games. Fontbonne freshman Casey Kern, sophomore Samantha Rosner and senior Katy Mueller all hit over .700 in the two-game series. Kern recorded five RBI’s and a home run while Mueller had five hits, four runs scored, four RBI’s, four stolen bases and a home run.
On the mound, sophomore Ana Hibbeler and freshman Kourtney Von Behren recorded victories. VonBehren struck out 11 in a complete game, one-hit shutout.
On Sunday, VonBehren pitched into some bad luck as she took the loss against regionally ranked Washington University. VonBehren allowed just four hits in the 3-1 loss. Fontbonne banged out nine-hits but struggled at the plate with runners in scoring position.
In the nightcap, junior Brittany Kirn threw a three-hit gem as the Griffins won 2-0.
Fontbonne sophomore Amanda Beaver got the Griffins on the scoreboard in the third inning on a RBI’s single scoring Rosner who had singled and stole second earlier in the inning. In the fifth inning, Fontbonne took advanted of some sloppy defense by Washington University to double their lead. Senior Sam Pecher drove in Stephanie Wilson with a single to make it 2-0.
Kirn made the lead stand up as she went seven innings striking out four and walking nobody. Kirn is now a team-best 7-1 on the season.
Fontbonne will learn its seed and tournament schedule on Tuesday evening.
