A group of Fontbonne University students have gained some very valuable real-world experience, thanks to their participation in Enactus, an international nonprofit organization that is a blended partnership of students, academics and business owners.

On Monday, March 2, Fontbonne’s Enactus club presented to a professional group of around 100 at the Enactus United States National Exposition Pre-Event, held at Enterprise Holdings. Attendees included high-level representatives of Enterprise, Walmart and KPMG. And in April, the same group will present at the 2015 Enactus United States National Exposition, to be held in downtown St. Louis, in front of an audience from around the country.

The students’ presentation encompassed their six-month partnership with the Ferguson Burger Bar and More, a business in Ferguson, Mo., owned by Charles and Kizzie Davis. Enactus students have played an advisory role for the Burger Bar, offering brainstorming, metrics and target profit margins. Their efforts have, in part, helped the business recover from an economic downturn after the shooting death of Michael Brown last summer and the protests that followed. The partnership also attracted the attention of the national Enactus president, Alex Perwich, who visited Fontbonne in February.

Through Fontbonne’s Enactus club, (an international nonprofit organization that is a blended partnership of students, academics and business owners) Fontbonne students Aaron Pavese, Morgan Roehrig, Celeste Hermann and Holly Rodgers are helping the owners of the Ferguson Burger Bar and More — one of the many businesses impacted by community unrest.

“I have a great group of students who are embracing this educational opportunity,” said Mark Alexander, Fontbonne instructor and Enactus faculty advisor. “Our effectiveness will be measured by how much we can help the owner use entrepreneurial actions to help revive his business. That includes empowerment to improve his livelihood economically, socially and environmentally.”

In communities like Ferguson, Alexander points out, a business is much more than a place of commerce. It is a viable piece of the community that adds to the many factors that help a city maintain stability.

The “hands-on” effort by the Fontbonne students is a reflection of Fontbonne’s commitment to experiential learning outside the classroom.

Efforts by the group have not gone unnoticed. Local CBS-TV affiliate KMOV Channel 4 highlighted the Fontbonne students and Alexander during a recent visit to Ferguson. Watch the video and read the piece produced as an evening news feature. Additionally, the St. Louis Review featured the group
