A good deal of the work done to sustain human life is done in the home, yet it remains largely invisible. More interestingly, a contrast between ‘household production’ and ‘market production’ highlights what goes missing when we identify economic life entirely with the market. In this lecture, Dr. Hirschfeld will trace out the evolution of ‘household production’ over time and discuss how thinking more about household production could help us steer towards a more humane economy.
