Dual Degree Program Gives Students More Opportunity, Flexibility
Saint Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University recently introduced a new occupational therapy dual degree program in partnership with Washington University in St. Louis. Beginning this spring, students can work to receive an undergraduate degree in either biology or psychology from Fontbonne, then continue on to receive a master's degree in occupational therapy from Washington University in St. Louis, all in five years.
The United States Department of Labor anticipates that within the next eight years, the employment of occupational therapists will grow significantly faster than the average for other occupations. This suggests that students beginning their studies now will have numerous job opportunities when they graduate.
"Occupational therapy is such an amazing field," said Libby Rayhel, associate professor of biological and physical sciences and co-coordinator of the dual degree program. "Students who are studying to become occupational therapists will one day be able to use their talents to work in the areas of patient care, community outreach, research in rehabilitation, and so much more. We really feel that this new dual degree program will open many new doors for our students."
As an added benefit, students who receive acceptance into the Fontbonne and Washington University occupational therapy dual degree program reap the opportunities and resources of both schools, including access to faculty, research, internship opportunities, additional degree programs and more.
"We've found that students really appreciate the added value provided by the dual degree opportunity," said Rebecca Foushee, chair of Fontbonne's behavioral sciences department and occupational therapy dual degree program co-coordinator. "Students who want to pursue the excellent opportunities as an occupational therapist benefit from the coursework, campus environment and academic credentials from two wonderful institutions. And they'll earn their degrees in a condensed amount of time."
Partnering with other schools is not new for Fontbonne. The university also has dual degree programs in engineering and social work.
