Fontbonne Joins Character Education Leaders

Fontbonne University is proud to become one of the newest members of CHARACTERplus. In doing so, Fontbonne, the first university to join the organization, becomes part of a group of more than 33,000 educators in Missouri and Illinois who are committed to embedding character education into the curriculum and culture of schools.

The mission of CHARACTERplus, which traditionally works with K-12 teachers, is to develop positive character traits in young people through a high-quality character education process. Fontbonne will make the program’s offerings available to education faculty and pre-service teachers. They will have access to the latest research, experts in the field, the philosophical foundations of character and moral development, and proven methods in collaborative classroom strategies, curriculum integration, bully prevention, conflict resolution, and student empowerment.

“CHARACTERplus corresponds with the mission of Fontbonne — educating leaders to serve a world in need,” said Ruth Irvine, Fontbonne’s director of advanced programs in education. “As we participate in this program to help educate our students, we hope that they will, in turn, pass on the same strong sense of ethics and character to their students, classrooms and schools.”

CHARACTERplus, a division of Cooperating School Districts of Greater St. Louis, has developed a research-proven process that weaves character education into the fabric of a school community. For more information, visit
