Softball Team Undefeated in SLIAC Play

Fontbonne softball goes undefeated in regular season conference play for the first time in school history with a 16-0 record. The Griffins are 30-10 on the season and finish their home stance 12-0. This is the third year in a row where the Griffins have been named regular season SLIAC Champions.

The Griffins swept Principia last night 9-1 and 9-0, both games only going five innings.

Sophomore Danni Glixman hit a 3-run shot over the left-field fence, marking her territory on the brand new scoreboard. Senior pitcher Rachel McCarthy got herself out of a bases-loaded jam after walking two and hitting a batter in the second inning, calmly forcing the third out at home plate.

D. Glixman hit a two-run shot the other way over the right field wall in the third, bringing in her sister Cassie who doubled to get on base.

The Griffins added five runs on six hits during the third inning, including a triple by junior Sarah Cerutti. During the game, Fontbonne accumulated six stolen bases.

McCarthy recorded her 13th win of the season, striking out seven in three innings of work. Freshman Lindsay Schaefer struck out two in her two innings of relief for McCarthy, allowing zero hits and zero walks.

During the second game of the evening, Fontbonne scored nine runs in two innings. The first five runs were scored in the second off of six hits, a wild pitch, and an error by Principia. The entire lineup stepped to the plate during the inning which included four singles, two doubles, and three stolen bases.

Fontbonne scored their final four runs during the fourth inning. Cerutti hit a longball over the left center wall, bringing in freshman Emily Smith who previously singled up the middle. Morgan Bauer, who pinch ran for Marissa Simon who singled, scored on a wild pitch and C. Glixman scored on a grounder by D. Glixman. Freshman Madi Leonard picked up her 11th win of the season.

Fontbonne plays in the first round of the SLIAC tournament at Principia College in Elsah, Ill., on Thursday, May 2. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. against Eureka College.
