Orientation FAQs

Orientation Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Orientation cost?

Every new student pays a one-time orientation fee of $200.00 for first year students and $50.00 for transfer students, which is added to the student’s bill. The fee pays for meals, supplies, and activities during orientation. It is to your advantage then to maximize your time during orientation in order to get your money’s worth.

Who are my WING Leaders and what do they do?

WING Leaders are the upperclassmen that have been trained to assist you as you seamlessly transition to Fontbonne University and become a part of Griffin Nation.  This team – aimed to Welcome In New Griffins (WING) – also help plan and oversee many of the orientation events and traditions.  Your WING Leaders will contact you in late July to introduce themselves.  You may meet a few of them throughout Griffin 101, but the entire team will be present and ready to welcome you to campus on Thursday, August 11, at the beginning of Fall Orientation.

What if I have to work during orientation?

Orientation is the start of your college experience and an expectation of all first-year students. You wouldn’t miss class for working, so you shouldn’t schedule yourself to work during orientation. There are several mandatory activities during orientation that are critical to your success at Fontbonne University. If you know of any conflict that cannot be avoided please contact Joel Hermann, Associate Director for the Center of Leadership and Community Engagement, at jhermann@fontbonne.edu or 314-889-4590.

What if I need special accommodations during orientation?

Please contact Joel Hermann (jhermann@fontbonne.edu or 314-889-4590) as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made.

What is this "Orientation Overnight Trip" and what should I bring?

A recommended packing list would include:

  • Basic Toiletrees (Bedding/Pillows/Blankets will be provided)
  • Swim-wear and Beach Towel
  • Bug Spray
  • Sunscreen
  • Water Bottle
  • Closed-Toe Shoes and Gym Shorts (for Griffin Games Event)
  • NO money – food will be provided!

Who can come with me to Fall Orientation?

Fall Orientation begins on Thursday, and that day is open to anyone!  However, it is important to note that the new student will be separated from his or her family and guests for various portions of the afternoon.  Thursday includes a welcome ceremony, the “Catch The Fire” initiation ceremony, and a Family Farewell BBQ; all of which celebrate Griffin Nation and are open to any and all guests.  Activities after the BBQ on Thursday and the rest of the weekend, however, are strictly built for new students only.  Parents, families, and other guests are highly encouraged to come back to Fontbonne University for Homecoming – which will be held in the fall semester.
