Alumni Association Board Announces New Officers & Directors

The Fontbonne Alumni Association Board elected new officers to begin a two year service term effective July 1, 2015.
Jennifer Millikan’96 was elected as President, Anthony Effan’09 was elected as Vice President, and Mary Gould Papulis’10 was elected as Secretary. Each of these officers has served on the Board as a director, and chaired various committees before running for office. All three were instrumental in helping to modernize and revise the Association By-laws, leading mentoring programs for current students, devoting numerous hours as volunteers, and developing new ways to engage alumni. While Effan and Papulis were each elected to their office after chairing committees, Millikan ascended from secretary to the presidency. Outgoing president Christina Anderson’03, and Vice President Kirk Halveland’08, had served the Board for the past six years.

The Alumni Board also elected six new directors to begin their two year service term July 1, 2015. Ernestine Jones-Gordon’76, Kelvin Green’09’12, Allison McCoy’14, Maria Eftink’06, Elizabeth Brennan’14, and LaToya Thompson’11, will join fellow alumni board members in planning, developing, and advising the Alumni Association on engagement activities and programs for Fontbonne Alumni. Each will serve on committees like Board Development, Awards & Achievements, Reunion, GOLD, and spirituality.

New President, Jennifer Millikan’96 said, “we are excited as officers to begin this new chapter with the Fontbonne Alumni Association, and we welcome the new directors as part of our team.”

Alumni Spotlight - Carol Ivy'79, "Spicing Up Her Second Act..."

For thirty-one years, Carol Ivy’79, has been a teacher. She taught home economics, now family and consumer sciences, at Windsor Middle School in Imperial, MO, and Culinary Arts at Jefferson College. She and her husband adopted her daughter from Peru as a baby, and she taught her about cooking. It was something they could do together, and she inspired her daughter to go into the hospitality field. Mom and daughter had often spoke of having their own business one day and pursuing their dreams.

Carol’s daughter Emily was working long hours in the hotel industry, and wanted to find a job that had better hours so she could be a full-time mom. Around the same time that Carol was deciding to retire, the hotel that her daughter was working for was closing down. They decided the time was right for them to open their own business. Carol was ready for her second act.

They saw a real need for a spice business because you could not get original or unusual spices in Jefferson Co., and Carol normally had to go to Soulard or St. Charles to get the spices she loved to cook with. Carol knew that it was becoming increasing popular for people to want to be healthier and cook at home. Flavorful meals bring families together, and so does a business.

She and Emily were able to purchase a building in historic Kimmswick and open The Spicery on Mother’s Day weekend 2015. Their business specializes in spices, coffee, tea, and some specialty cooking oils. The first weekend they opened they had 350 people come through their shop and they sold out of their coffee.

Besides being in a great historical location, The Spicery has an exclusive contract with the St. Louis herb society. They plan to expand the business and offer cooking classes and other specialties.

Carol said what she gained most from her education at Fontbonne was self-esteem. “When you graduate from Fontbonne, you gain not only an education, but a feeling that you can accomplish anything.”

She is taking that feeling and spicing up her new career! Visit Carol Ivy’79 at The Spicery, located at 213 Market Street in historic Kimmswick, MO. Or contact her at: Thespiceryofkimmswick.mo@gmail.com
