Tuberculosis Screening

Required Screening per Missouri Law

The State of Missouri now requires that all college and university new students and employees undergo screening questionnaire for tuberculosis (see Senate Bill 197 for full legislation). Following guidelines from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Fontbonne University’s initial tuberculosis screening questionnaire will determine if actual blood testing is necessary for you. In compliance with Senate Bill 197, any student that does not complete the tuberculosis screening questionnaire within the first six weeks of his or her first academic semester will find that a registration hold has been placed on his or her student account, preventing him or her from registering for future classes. Any employee that does not complete the tuberculosis screening questionnaire at the beginning of employment will face probation until compliant, though failure to complete the requirements during the probationary period may result in termination of employment.

What Is Tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that can spread through the lymph nodes and bloodstream to any organ in your body, but is most often found in the lungs. While most people who are exposed to tuberculosis never develop symptoms, because the bacteria can live in an inactive form in the body, tuberculosis bacteria can become active. In an active state, tuberculosis bacteria cause death of tissue in the organs they infect and can be fatal if left untreated.
